Re-styling the current application

NOTE: this issue isn't meant to be done all at once necessarily, it can be done in small sensible chunks. (Good idea to comment what part one is tackling when working on this)

We have some proper designs on the issues labeled with "Design" and we can start making the application look like that. This includes major changes to the layout and styles and even some functionality. Communication between designers and developers is probably quite important to iron out details for each small chunk.
