Other federated social networks (like Mastodon) allow their users to have an empty display name, this results in getting notifications of users not having a name at all:

I suggest to just show their username ("@username@instance.tld"), if they haven't got a display name

We don't need to allow local users to have empty display names for this. (that's a matter for a different issue probably). This issue is only about displaying empty display names of other fediverse software (i.e Mastodon)

As this issue is 5 months old I've just run another test using a Mastodon account, and it seems like empty display names are not an issue anymore. (it just defaults to handle@domain.tld)
