Unexpected line breaks in Markdown-statuses

The CSS setting white-space: pre-wrap; has the effect that this Markdown-post:

This is
normal text

> This is a
> quote

looks like this:

I expected that single newlines have no effect on the resulting text, as is normal for Markdown.

The content of the status is:

<p>This is\nnormal text</p>\n<blockquote><p>This is a\nquote</p>\n</blockquote>\n

Maybe single newlines could be removed from HTML after Markdown-processing?
