@Deviant This only addresses half of the issue--pleroma admins might like a say in how many previews are fetched by default as well. I believe part of the concern that led to the change was the bandwidth required for server admins when a post with a large amount of images was viewed.
On a more general note: I think a lot of the frustration users are expressing stem from the fact that this change should have been admin configurable and opt-in from its addition. As a user and past pleroma admin this is not the first time I have been frustrated with being at the mercy of the developers preferences on how things should function. I believe, going forward, it would be better to make such changes configurable when they are made as it is unreasonable to expect everyone who uses/runs pleroma as a hobby to be involved in/keeping track of the issues posted here (or to even have an account here at all--I did not when I originally started up an instance).
The addition of the change-log is a great way to communicate changes so that people are aware of what's happening. In my opinion going forward, however, I think changes to the way the software functions should be opt-in when possible. This, of course, is not always a reasonable expectation (for example, adding subject lines to the post box or a link to direct messages on the left panel) but in this particular case I think opt-in would have been more appropriate especially because it limits functionality (as opposed to adding it) and posting more than 5 images certainly isn't only done to exploit the previous functionality.
@feld well if anyone needed any more reasons not to come to the pleroma gitlab there are always comments like this after the issue has been closed to remind us
ESR is a disgrace to the open source community. A disgusting sexist racist pig. Please stop defending him because I called someone out and then left a meme about stupid internet points.
If we don't call this stuff out Pleroma continues to be slandered. We have enough of the Nazi crap to deal with, we don't need this too.
@feld be mindful @karolata has never been involved in software projects and doesn't know how hypocritical ESR is. Apply the BSD forum conduct here as well, it's working wonderfully for @kaniini .
Not everyone knows how to research an individual from the now to the very first USENet post.
Reasons like these are why my repos are 1)private & 2) anonymous in the darknets.
Issue is fixed, so I hope people are happy. Please refrain from flamewar language / meta meta meta discussions in issues, we can do that in other places (IRC, fedi).
