how does this look?

I honestly don't like it much as it brings clutter to the interface that's already too cluttered (the external icon needs to go as well), but if it's an optional feature that requires the server to turn it on I don't mind having the minimal code to support it.

For the placement I'd put it after the name@instance.xyz on the header row, that's a logical place for the instance icon, plus it won't look so out of place while being full color as the name can also have emozi and stuff

Is this how it's done on SPC, too?

I'm willing to merge it if I can confirm that the option will be merged in BE, the amount of code on FE side is minimal and I'm sure some people would enjoy using it

Yeah, we can get it in the backend, but not really the way it's currently done, i think. We can think about it more there.

Actually just noticed that it doesn't seems to be working on mine right now.

I think it broke along with a bunch of others from Oban 2.0 or Gun changes.

hmm I see, well it wouldn't really test the frontend parts any more than my previous testing did (in which I just hacked favicon into the users in entity normalizer) so I'll just merge it in.
